Istanbul Pattern Artwork

Micador presents this useful guide to creating a patterned art piece for your home.

You have spent weekends collecting objects that now adorn your home. Time has been taken selecting wall paint, floor coverings and fluffing cushions. Now it’s time to add your personal touch; it’s time to get creative and fill your home with art!

Let your painting reflect your personality. You’ll find inspiration and colour palettes all around you. Maybe it’s a souvenir you bought on your latest holiday, the shape a coffee cup makes when someone forgets to use a coaster on the hard wood dining table, or maybe it’s that great photo your saw on that blog… the potential for subject matter is endless. We will show you a good example and explain a great colour technique that is sure to get your started on your own artistic journey.

Slightly varying diamond sizes can give the pattern character, but generally the masking tape will make sure that the gap size is consistent.

Use Orange/yellow more sparingly to improve the effect. You can either randomly or systematically paint the diamonds.

Purchasing premixed colours saves you time and effort, so you have more time to work on your masterpiece.

What you need:

  • 20”x16” Clean Slate Stretched Canvas
  • Acrylic Orange/Yellow
  • Acrylic Phthalo Blue
  • Acrylic Cobalt Blue
  • Micador Lotus Palette
  • Achiever Brush Pack
  • Roll of Masking Tape

Step-by-step

Step 1: Preparation

Clear your kitchen table, spread out newspaper to cover the surface and lay your canvas flat on top of it.

Step 2: Time to tape up!

Put masking tape on the canvas in long diagonal lines around 3cm apart and then cross them going the other way, as per pattern attached.

Step 3: On the edge

Mask around the edge of the canvas to ensure your pattern stays neat and tidy.

Step 4: Colour

Start painting with three colours: Phthalo Blue, Cobalt Blue and Orange/yellow. You can vary these colours but it’s always good to stick to our Three Colour Rule (see below).

Step 5: Reveal

Wait until the paint is completely dry before peeling off the masking tape.

Step 6: Time to decorate!

Now you are ready to hang the painting up!
